Walking Forward with Confidence: Lisa’s Knee Replacement Journey

When Lisa Johns first heard about Dr. Cohen, it wasn’t in a doctor’s office, it was at Fringe Salon in Pt. Pleasant, West Virginia. She overheard another client sharing her experience and couldn’t help but listen closely. After years of struggling with knee pain and feeling discouraged by a previous physician who declined surgery due to her diabetes and weight, Lisa was searching for someone who would truly see her situation and offer real solutions.
For three years, Lisa relied on a walker. She couldn’t put weight on her knee and was told she would need to lose 60 pounds before surgery would even be considered. The limitations affected everything she did. After retiring in October 2025, selling her home, and moving into an apartment, she was ready for a new chapter, but her knee pain made even simple independence difficult.
From her very first appointment, Dr. Cohen approached Lisa’s care differently. He carefully evaluated her range of motion, listened to her concerns, and explained the surgical plan clearly, including the use of robotic-assisted technology. When Lisa brought up her weight and diabetes, he addressed her questions with confidence and reassurance. He wasn’t dismissive or hesitant. Instead, he provided education, answered every question, and made sure she understood each step.
“His confidence made me feel confident,” Lisa stated.
Lisa underwent knee replacement surgery just 20 days ago, with appointments in Chillicothe and her procedure performed in Pickerington, Ohio. The day of surgery, she felt prepared and supported. The nursing team walked her through each step, keeping both Lisa and her sister informed throughout the process. Having worked in a hospital herself, Lisa was especially attentive to how staff treated patients. She described the team as “the nicest people you’d ever want to meet”. “They were attentive, respectful, and never once made me feel like an inconvenience,” she added.
Her recovery has been remarkable. As of today, she has already accomplished all of her prescribed exercises. Unlike her brother, who struggled to regain movement after his own knee surgery elsewhere, Lisa was bending her knee the very next day. She also reports her pain at just 2 out of 10. For the first time in years, she’s walking and confidently putting weight on her leg without relying on a walker.
She’s looking forward to returning to the simple joys she once had to put on hold, attending local high school sports games, taking small walks, and spending quiet afternoons working on puzzles.
When asked if she would recommend Dr. Cohen, her answer is immediate: “Oh yes.” She has already referred several people.
Lisa believes what sets Dr. Cohen apart is his genuine investment in his patients. “He listens. He encourages questions,” she mentioned. He ensures patients understand what’s happening and why. Throughout her care, he remained attentive, consistently checking on her comfort and making sure she felt heard.
For Lisa, this wasn’t just about replacing a knee. It was about restoring independence, confidence, and the ability to move forward into retirement without limitations. And with the right expertise, clear communication, and compassionate care guiding the way, she’s doing exactly that.
