From Wheelchair to Walking: Melissa’s Journey Back to Living

Melissa Ritchie’s life has always been centered around family. As a mother of eight and a grandmother of two, her days are filled with kids’ sporting events, tournaments, and time spent with the people she loves most. Working in medical billing, she’s no stranger to the healthcare world, but nothing could have prepared her for the level of pain she began to experience.

What started as discomfort quickly became debilitating.

Melissa’s left side, her hip and knee, was in constant pain. Her hip had deteriorated to the point where, as she described it, “there was nothing left… it was grinding.” The pain didn’t stop when she tried to rest. She couldn’t sleep, often crying out during the night without realizing it. Looking back, she says, “I didn’t realize how sleep deprived I was.”

Her mobility declined rapidly. Before surgery, Melissa became wheelchair dependent, at times crawling or holding onto walls just to move around her home. Despite receiving injections for her knee, the relief never came.

Through a referral from her care team, Melissa was introduced to Dr. Brian Cohen. The recommendation carried weight, she was told that if her referring physician needed surgery himself, Dr. Cohen is who he would choose.

From her very first appointment, Melissa appreciated the honesty and clarity. Dr. Cohen was straightforward, explaining exactly what was happening and what needed to be done. There was no confusion, just a clear path forward.

As her surgery approached, Melissa admits she had doubts. The pain in her knee was so severe that the day before surgery, she considered calling to ask if that should be treated first instead. But after her left hip replacement, everything changed.

“The hip was the problem,” she realized. “When he fixed my hip, it took all the pain away.”

Today, Melissa is no longer confined to a wheelchair. She’s now able to stand, walk, and move freely, something that once felt impossible.

Her pain is gone. And with it, her life has opened back up.

Melissa has returned to the activities that matter most, being present for her children’s games, spending time with her grandchildren, and simply moving through her day without fear or limitation.

Throughout her care, she felt supported every step of the way. From appointments in Chillicothe and Grove City to the day of her procedure, she describes the experience as “excellent,” highlighting both the staff and the level of attention she received. “He explained everything thoroughly and listened to every question I had,” she shared.

When asked if she would trust Dr. Cohen again, her answer is immediate: yes. In fact, she already knows she’ll be returning when it’s time to address her right hip, and has even referred her own father for care.

For Melissa, this wasn’t just about relieving pain. It was about restoring her ability to live fully, to show up for her family, and to move forward with confidence.

And in her words, the reason is simple: “He’s the best.”
