A Life-Changing Experience: One Patient’s Journey to Hip Replacement with Dr. Brian Cohen

When Mr. Tindall came to us, he was at a breaking point. Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, he had moved to Ohio after a series of medical setbacks. His journey started with back issues, including an artificial disk replacement surgery in 2022, which had initially been meant to address his pain. But over time, his health continued to decline. His hips, once functional, were now bone-on-bone, causing him intense pain and significantly limiting his mobility. He was unable to walk, and his quality of life was at an all-time low. He hadn’t worked in five years, and simple tasks had become nearly impossible.

As he shared his story, his frustration and hopelessness were palpable. He told us how pain had completely taken over his life. “It completely sucked; I’ve never felt pain like that before,” he said. Before he came to see Dr. Brian Cohen, walking was a struggle. “I couldn’t even sling my legs over the bed, trying to walk was so painful,” he explained.

Despite the pain, he loved his dogs and had tried to stay active by walking them. But that, too, had become a distant memory. His hobbies—like landscaping, playing cards, and bartending—were now unreachable.

Timothy came to Dr. Cohen after a complicated hospital stay for a blood infection following a stent removal procedure. His surgeon at Ohio State had suggested waiting for six months before reevaluating, but he knew that wasn’t a viable option. He couldn’t wait that long. A nurse recommended Dr. Cohen, and just a few days later, he was in the office in Dublin.

From the moment he met Dr. Cohen, everything changed. He recalled his first interaction, saying, “He came in, and it wasn’t just about the surgery. He listened. He was compassionate and had a plan that made sense.” Dr. Cohen didn’t dismiss his pain; instead, he validated his experiences and immediately put a plan in place to address his hip problems.

“After all I’d been through, Dr. Cohen came in and made sure I felt heard,” he shared. “Even when I was in the hospital after the infection, he checked on me regularly. That kind of care meant a lot to me.”

In total, both hips were replaced at the same time, and while recovery wasn’t easy, it was clear from the start that the decision was the right one. Timothy was in the hospital for 7-8 days following the surgery, and the first few days were tough. But as soon as he started walking, he knew things were different.

“I could tell right away it was better. Before surgery, I couldn’t get around. I couldn’t walk. But now, it’s like night and day. The recovery was hard, but it’s been worth it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” he said, now 13 weeks post-surgery.

Mr. Tindall is not only back to walking his dogs around the block, but he’s also returned to some of his favorite activities, including driving his Challenger. “I’ve got two of the three things I loved back in my life. I’m really looking forward to going shark fishing again soon, and having all three,” he added.

He reflected on his entire experience with Dr. Cohen and the team: “Everything you guys have done from start to finish has been incredible. Nothing but good things to say. I can’t thank Dr. Cohen enough for everything he did for me.”

The pain that used to control his life is now a thing of the past, and he has his mobility—and his life—back. The transformation he’s experienced, both physically and emotionally, has been nothing short of life changing.

As a team, we are grateful to have been a part of his journey, and we are thrilled to see him reclaim his life. His story is a powerful reminder that with the right care and a little courage, it’s possible to overcome even the most challenging medical setbacks.
